Ethiopia, officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia,
is a country situated in the Horn of Africa. It is the 2nd-most populous
nation in Africa, bordered by Eritrea to the north, Djibouti to the northeast,
Somalia to the east, Kenya to the south, and Sudan to the west. Ethiopia is
the oldest independent country in Africa and one of the oldest in the world.
It is also the second-oldest official Christian nation in the world after Armenia.
It has long been an intersection between the civilizations of North Africa,
the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa. Unique among African countries,
Ethiopia was never colonised, maintaining its independence throughout the
Scramble for Africa onward, except for a five-year period (1936-41) when
it was under Italian occupation. Historically Ethiopia was called Abyssinia.

Growing
Internet Use and ICT in Ethiopia
Ethiopia Telecommunications Market Overview, Statistics and
Forecasts
Ethiopia still practices a monopoly in almost all areas of its telecoms sector. Market
penetration is still very low, but major efforts to roll out a national fibre backbone
and wireless access networks have resulted in an acceleration of growth in all market
segments. Further massive investments into fixed, mobile and Internet services, totalling
US$4 billion, are planned for the five years to 2012. The government is intent on eventually
privatising the national operator, ETC, and introducing competition in mobile and Internet
services. This report provides an overview of the telecommunications sector in Ethiopia,
a profile of ETC, key statistics, and scenario forecasts for the years 2010 and 2015.
17 August 2009
Ethiopia is one of the few African countries still practising a
monopoly in its telecoms sector though with an independent
regulator. Total telephone line penetration remains very low.
However, the government is intent on privatising the national
operator, Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation, and
introducing competition in mobile and Internet services. The
mobile sector has been growing by 100% or more per annum in
recent years, taking the network to its capacity limit and
resulting in major infrastructure expansion efforts. Several
broadband initiatives launched during 2004 promise to bring the
country closer to the information society. The national operator,
ETC, has budgeted a record amount for the financial year
2004/2005 for infrastructure improvements. This report carries
details of the developments taking place in Ethiopia’s
telecommunications market with key industry statistics.
Ethiopia's government with a new IT program is endevouring, in a
way similar to several other African countries for leap out of
decaying public services with the help of IT. The dream is to
jump an entire generation of infrastructure by going directly to
internet technology.
The Ethiopian prime minister, talks of IT providing a short cut
to development, according to Michael Cross in The Guardian,
London. In Ethiopia only 1.2% of the population has a telephone
and the 0.1% Internet usage is low even by African standards.
