United Arab Emirates Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband Market
Report
The UAE has a well-developed and technologically advanced
telecommunications infrastructure and has high mobile telephone
and Internet penetration. Majority government-owned Emirates
Telecommunication Corporation Ltd (Etisalat) operates, maintains
and develops the national and international fixed-line network,
mobile telephony, Internet access and cable TV services but its
monopoly has been cancelled. The company has been increasing its
presence in numerous countries. Broadband Internet connections
are available by Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and cable, with
DSL line numbers growing quickly.
UAE Broadband, Internet and Digital Media Market Overview
Internet and Statistics
Incumbent Etisalat and alternative operator are vying to offer faster broadband
packages over a mixture of ADSL, mobile broadband and FttH in a market that already
has one of the highest broadband penetration rates in the Middle East. UAE governments
at both federal and emirate level have been very interventionist, particularly Dubai,
with programs to encourage computer and Internet use. Government policy has also
included encouragement for media, IT and Internet related businesses and Dubai
has become a regional centre for the industry. Satellite delivered television is
a particularly healthy industry in the Middle East region and much of it is now
also headquartered in Dubai.
